Johan Galtung is the Tun Mahathir Professor of Global Peace at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He is the main founder of the Peace Research Institute Oslo and established the Journal of Peace Research. He holds nine honorary degrees and is a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize. In 2000, he founded TRANSCEND Peace University, the world’s first online peace university. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oslo.
Professor Galtung is the founder of the peace and conflict studies discipline and is recognized for the concepts of Peace Journalism, structural violence, and negative v. positive peace. He is also a critic of the West and classifies the U.S. as both a republic and an empire.
